Today we will be discussing two related sets of concepts: with regard to liturgy, the tension between play and seriousness in liturgical experience; with regard to music, the relationship between practice and performance. Some of the living questions that arise in liturgical music revolve around these tensions.

Today's Class Activities

  • Mini-lecture: Defining practice and performance in music and ritual (and what's at stake?).
  • RoF process: What has been your experience of seriousness and play, practice and performance in the class so far?
  • Today we will BEGIN to workshop final pieces. The ones we do today (the first day of round 1) will probably be quite sketchy! Our job as a community is to assist our creators with meaningful feedback. As we workshop pieces, we will also influence one another's composition and hopefully create a more satisfying and whole final liturgy.
